The Ancient Song of The Human Race

It traveled down long winding highways,
Ancient roads that were barren and long.
It foraged for seeds of experience,
And the knowledge of what’s right and wrong.
It’s about to start a new journey,
Which unites all the nations on Earth.           (emphasise 36 words in bold)
We pray for our life giver’s guidance,
And a pathway to global rebirth.

The Human Race can seek this pathway,
Of hope and peace that will last;
A new dawn for our children’s future,
Healing wounds from our [aching] past.
And one day on some far away planet,
Ancient earth songs will be sung,
In universal celebration,
That Earth’s tribes united as one.

But first we must answer five questions
To drink from those waters of life:
Why do some of Earth’s children go hungry?
Why are murder and terror so rife?
Why permit the destruction of nature?
Why are the weak and the poor treated wrong?
And why with so many prayers sung to heaven,
Can't Earth’s religions unite in one song?

The Human Race can find this roadway
Of hope and peace that will last;
A new dawn for our children’s future,
Healing wounds from our [aching] past.
And one day on some glorious planet,
In joyful words to stars above,
Every Thursday, they'll remember,
How we united in peace and love.

As I stare at the stars in the heavens,
On this cold winter’s night clad in snow,
I wonder if children are watching,                     (recite in a whisper)
Seeing their ancestors, here down below.          (recite in a loud whisper)
Can they hear all what we're thinking?             (recite in a loud whisper)
Can they touch our hearts from the sky?          (recite in a loud whisper)
They'll be so proud to be called Human
When love answers five questions called why.

The Human Race will walk this highway,
Of life and peace that will last;
A new dawn for our children’s future,
Healing wounds from our [aching] past.
And one day on countless beautiful planets,
As their dawn’s about to begin,
They'll remember our ancient voyage,
When a kingdom was found from within.

(Suggestion: When finished reciting, look around the audience in silence for 12 seconds. Then say 'world peace is possible in a few years' and walk off.)

A final thought

If you are visiting a loved one in hospital, who is lying unconscious or in a coma, read this little poem aloud to the patient. It could help you and those listening, worry a bit less about the difficult situation by thinking about other matters. It may even help you find inner peace and strength.
